Well said! Thank you for covering these important points in the work environment. Safety often gets left out of the discussion. I'm glad you included it. Good information for H.R. directors and staff.

Dana,
Thanks. Points well taken. I think you'd agree that in most cases BBS is prescribed before a thorough diagnosis has occurred. "How" work is perfomed is an important, yet small element in the safe work process. Moreover, it's the measurement of performance related to the "What and How Much" and under what "Environmental Circumstances" that often gets in the way.

Bob Vandenberg, former safety director for General Mills, was honored last year at an ASSE NW Chapter Meeting. When asked if there is one idea or thought he'd like to share with the younger safety professionals in attendence, he said that "Safety is nothing more than doing the job the right way. The tough part is getting everyone to agree on what that means and then doing it!". It sounds so simple, then why is it so difficult?

There are some underlying assumptions in BBS safety that need to be addressed before it can be used. These assumptions are addressed in Dan Peterson's systems approach to safety management. In my opinion the top three underlying assumptions are:

1) Management behavior does not need to be part of the BBS observation and correction system.

2) All physical issues that contribute to unsafe conditions have been addressed.

3) The strong incentives to get the job done for the sake of productivity can be overcome by BBS corrections.

Roslyn,
Thanks for the feedback. I'm a real believer in the power of creating an organizaiton that values learning. The supervisor-worker communication and coaching process is an important factor. I'll be writing more on this soon.
